Karkatha-Veera kudi Vellalars

"Maravarum, Kallvarum, Agamudaiyarrum mella mella maruvi Vellalar aayinare"

The famous Tamil Saying mentioned above shows that Caste is a slow evolutionary process. Therefore, the term Caste, in the past was just used to Describe or Categorize a person according to one's job, duty or a way of life & once they accumulate enough wealth, there must have been CASTE REFINEMENT -UPGRADATION in the old days, unlike now.

KARKATHAR or KARKARTHAR PILLAI / VELLALAR
-THEY SAFEGUARDED THE "KAR" -THE CLOUD. THAT MEANS THEY BUILT DAMS TO SAVE RAIN WATER, GUARD THE WATER SOURCE, ABLE TO CREATE OR CALL UPON THE RAINWATER; MAYBE THROUGH RITUALS (Like the Rain Dance of the American (Red) Indians).

VEERA KUDI VELLALAR
THEY ARE A SMALL COMMUNITY OF FIGHTERS WHO FOUGHT TO SAFEGUARD THEIR HOMELAND.

MUSUGUNDAN OR MUSUGUNTHAN COMMUNITY IN SINGAPORE
MUSUGUNDAN people are EITHER KARKATHA OR VEERA KUDI VELLALARS. They are mostly located in PATTUKKOTAI in TANJAVUR. People of the community formed a translocal forms of citizenship amongst members of the Neighbouring Villages & fellow Karkatha Vellalar or Veera Kudi Vellalar caste members now in Singapore. Like all transnational communities involved in the production of locality, identity and social viability, these villagers now based in Singapore (immigrant city-state consisting of a diverse ethnic population with the Indians making up the third major group), maintain strong social and cultural ties with their villages in South India.

WHAT'S UP WITH EITHER KARKATHA OR VEERA KUDI?

There seem to be abit of confusion going on in our community people regarding our Exact Name of the caste we belong to; whether we are KARKATHA VELLALAR or VEERA KUDI VELLALAR. Many of our caste members call themselves KARKATHA VELLALAR (Especially the older generation members of our commmunity, both in Singapore and in India). Yet, many of the younger generation call themselves VEERA KUDI VELLALARS (As its written in their Caste Certification or mentioned in documents). I was told by many of the older generation caste members that this change in caste from KARKATHA VELLALARS to VEERA KUDI VELLALARS came about when there was NEW LAWS SET ASIDE BY THE TAMIL NADU STATE GOVERNMENT, which were Favouring towards the so-called "LOW CASTE" MEMBERS of TAMIL NADU. In order to get better or equal treatment by the government regarding many issues, many set up a meeting somewhere in the past and changed their caste, in fear of losing out to the lower caste groups (They were many who refused to follow and still maintain their KARKATHA VELLALAR identity; such as those from my mother's village, SOORAPALLAM).

HOW CASTE IS BORN?

OUT OF NATURAL SELECTION- When mankind evolved, no body will give you LAND -no body will call you RAJA.
YOU HAVE TO FIGHT TO MAKE IT. LAND has to be tilled to produce AGRICULTURE, those INVENTORS-SCIENTISTS
became the FIRST LAND OWNERS. In time, various other sectors grew SAFEGUARDING THE TRADE SECRET -which were handed over
genaration to genaration by family.

Rigidity in Caste System came Out of Favoured Racial Purity as it was strongly believed that OUT OF THE NATURAL SELECTION OF BEST TRADE -BEST MIND -BEST SALARY, was kept intact as a good WARRIOR naturally becomes TOP CLASS MAN or WOMAN. And Not to forget (EVER!) the White Man's successful concept of DIVIDE, RULE & CONVERT!

A FAMOUS VELLALAR..... CAN YOU GUESS WHO IS THAT?

IF YOUR ANSWER IS LORD AIYAPPAN, YOU ARE RIGHT!

"Vellalar kula jathan" AYYAN AYYAPPAN of SABARIMALA

About ten generations back there lived a Vellala youth by name Kandan Ayyan alia Kandan Ayyappan in Erumely , Kottayam district of Kerala in India.
We do not know anything about Ayyan's parents except that his father was one Kandan and uncle was one Perissery Pillai. He became the army chief of Pandalam Royal family . Ayyan was instrumental in the defeat of Udayanan, who attacked Sabarimala and tried to demolish the ancient Sastha temple in the thick forest of present Pathanamthitta district.
The Royal family of Pandalam (King Pandian ) was migrated from Tamilnadu about 800 years back .Ayyan's family belonged to "Vellalar kulam", followed them.
Rajasekharan ,the Pandian King, reconstructed the destroyed Sastha temple at Sabarimala with the help of Ayyan , Vavar , a Muslim youth from Kanjirappally and Kadutha, a Nair youth from Muzhukkeer ,Chengannoor, Alapuzha district. During the clash Ayyappan was killed. Perissery Pillai, the uncle ofAyyan constrcted the old small Sastha temple (kotchanpalam) at Erumely opposite the Vavar Mosque constructed by Muslims in memory of Vavar. Temple made in memory of Kadutha is seen in Sabarimala. After the death of Ayyappan people thought that he as the avathar of Lord Sastha and began to worship him. Later Sastha and Ayyappan became synonyms. Some say that Ayyan was the son of a member of royal family but Nalankal Krishna Pillai in his book Mahashekthrangulkku Munpil says that Brahmins had never the name Ayyan or Ayyappan. In the age old Eelaversevam pattu ( songs of Elavar sevam, see ref.no. 3) it is clearly stated that Kandan Ayyan belonged to Vellalar kulamNear the Sree Ayyappa talkies in Erumely,Kottayam dist there is a Vellala house called Puthanveedu, In the same compound there is one 300 year old ,thatched, diapilated mud house, the house of Perissery Pillai. There we can, even today see the old sword used by Ayyappan. Even now Ayyappan/Ayyan Pillai is very common among Vellalas of Kottayam Alapuzha, Pathanamthitta, Idikki and Ernakulam districts.
